Addiction, also known as substance use disorder (SUD), is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) as a chronic brain disorder. The Mayo Clinic explains addiction as a disease “that affects a person’s brain and behavior and leads to an inability to control the use of a legal or illegal drug or medication” without regard for consequence. Addiction can wreak havoc in all areas of one’s life, as an individual with substance use disorder is compelled to prioritize satisfying his drug cravings above all else. Treatment for addiction will require an overhaul of one’s mental and behavioral health. Healthy coping mechanisms are particularly crucial in the context of addiction recovery. Overcoming addiction involves not only breaking the physical dependence on a substance but also addressing the underlying issues that contribute to addictive behaviors. Psychology Today highlights various reasons why healthy coping mechanisms are important in recovery:

  • Prevention of relapse: For individuals recovering from addiction, the risk of relapse is a significant concern. Healthy coping mechanisms provide alternative ways to deal with stressors and triggers, reducing the likelihood of turning to destructive behaviors or substances.
