There is a plethora of different types of substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment programs available for individuals in need. Each program is different and they can range from extremely modest to excessively luxurious, and everywhere in between. The treatment process for substance abuse and/ or addiction can be arduous and for most individuals, will require tailored treatment plans. Although the notion of “you get what you pay for” can be applied to many situations in one’s life, rehab is not necessarily one of them. The purpose of an individual attending a substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment program is to learn a variety of mental health coping mechanisms and useful tools so as to live a successful, satisfying, sober life. While the environment where this healing takes place could play a role in one’s continued success, the notion that it must be done in a luxury environment is erroneous. There are many highly rated rehab programs that are not necessarily classified as luxury, such as Friendly House, for example, which provides its residents with unparalleled individualized support throughout the entire treatment process.
What’s The Big Deal?
Luxury treatment programs offer many different high-end amenities and create a resort-like atmosphere. In addition to including the traditional mental health treatment modalities in its resident’s treatment plans, it is not uncommon for luxury treatment programs to offer alternative treatment methods (e.g. massage therapy, acupuncture, etc.). Depending on the facility, the cost of luxury rehabs can range an average of between $40,000-$80,000 monthly. Most luxury treatment centers do not accept medical insurance as a form of payment. Meaning its residents are responsible for paying the entire cost of treatment out-of-pocket. Whereas some non-luxury treatment programs, such as Friendly House work with insurance companies (e.g. Kaiser) and do accept insurance as a form of payment or partial payment, depending on one’s healthcare plan. It is important to note, that although some people may feel more comfortable in the luxury rehab environment, there is no empirical data that points to a higher success rate for luxury rehabilitation.
So, Is It Worth It?
If money is no object and a reputable luxury treatment program is able to accommodate one’s needs, perhaps it is the best option. However, it is not uncommon for luxury rehab programs to allocate the majority of their resources to providing a high-end experience (e.g. exquisite surroundings, gourmet foods, vacation-like activities, etc.) and fall short in facilitating the ample psychological work needed for lasting recovery. Therefore, the short answer to the question of whether or not luxury rehab is worth its hefty price tag is: no, not always.
