An integral component of any formal substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment program is developing an aftercare plan with one’s clinical team.  Depending on an individual’s needs, this tailored plan can include a combination of detailed and broad recommendations, suggestions, and additional personalized guidance to help the individual maintain her sobriety after she has completed the program. For some individuals, transitioning into a sober living facility prior to returning home can be beneficial. Many individuals that struggled with substance abuse and/ or addiction will have prioritized satisfying drug cravings above all else. This can wreck havoc in all areas of one’s life and result in financial strain, legal complications, relationship rifts, and more. Although for some individuals the prospect of elongating the return to one’s home by moving into sober living may seem undesirable, the recovery process should not be rushed, as transitioning into a sober living facility could be incredibly helpful to one’s continued success. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the length of time an individual spends in substance abuse treatment (including sober living) can directly increase his or her outcome in recovery.

Cost

Generally, health insurance companies will help to cover a portion, if not all of the costs associated with attending a substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment program (depending on the treatment program and the specifics of one’s medical insurance plan). Unfortunately, very few insurance companies are able to provide any type of coverage or payout towards the expenses related to residing in a sober living facility. Further, on the off chance that an individual’s insurance plan does provide partial coverage for residing in a sober living home, most sober living facilities do not accept insurance as a form of payment for one’s stay. It is always beneficial to engage in a conversation surrounding a sober living’s cost, to ensure you are aware of your full financial responsibility for residing at the facility.

Much like there are a plethora of substance abuse and/ or addiction treatment programs available, there is also a wide variety of sober living options: from luxury sober living homes to modest sober living homes and everywhere in-between. Each sober living residence will offer different amenities and each will have its own associated costs and fees. Sober living is intended to be a stepping-stone that helps to transition an individual out of a treatment program and further prepares them for returning back to their home lives. Though the rules and regulations of sober living homes will be unique to each residence, there are several universal rules of residing in sober living, one of which is that residents must be able to pay for their accommodations.
