The Role of Nutrition & Physical Wellness in Recovery

by Friendly House on

Kale probably isn’t going to save your life. But it might help you feel better, which in turn helps you think better, and before you know it, you’re making healthier choices. At Friendly House, we’re big believers in holistic recovery; including physical wellness. When it comes to the mind, body, and spirit, it’s a whole lot harder to heal your heart and head when your body is running on fumes.

Your Body’s Been Through It

Addiction wreaks havoc on the body. IYKYK. Drugs and alcohol can mess with your ability to absorb nutrients from food, disrupt your sleep, alter your hormones, and affect your brain chemistry. Literally everything in your body feels the effects of addiction in one way or another.

In recovery, proper nutrition becomes a part of the repair process. Protein for muscle repair, healthy fats for brain function, complex carbs for sustained energy, and fruits and veg for all those important nutrients that regulate your synapses

Food Is Fuel - But Also So Much More

Stable blood sugar = stable mood. Happy gut = happy brain. What we eat plays such a vital role in how we feel. It’s easy to overlook the importance of consuming healthy foods but it’s a pretty simple formula; good in = good out. You’re not just feeding your body. You’re telling it that you care about it. That it’s deserving of love.

Move Your Body, Change Your Brain

Exercise literally changes your brain chemistry. It’s science. Moving your body around creates a chain reaction of results including the ability to, “...reduce insulin resistance, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the release of growth factors.” Exercise also releases dopamine and serotonin which are usually in a deficit in early recovery.

It’s all about finding your style of movement. Walking. Dancing. Stretching. Yoga. Kickboxing. Swimming in the ocean. Anything that gets your heart pumping and helps you feel alive again.

Your Body Deserves a Seat at the Recovery Table

You can do all the therapy, attend all the meetings, and still feel off if your body’s not getting what it needs. Recovery is holistic. That means your food choices, your movement, your hydration, your rest - they all matter.

So eat the kale. Take the walk. Stretch it out. Reclaim your body as a place of strength and healing. It’s your body and it deserves to be loved and cared for you; just like you.
