Transitional Living

Recovery from substance abuse and/ or addiction is a lifelong process.

Creating a solid foundation throughout one’s treatment program and immediately after can help an individual stay on his or her path of sobriety. Substance abuse and addiction treatment programs are intense experiences. For individuals who attend an inpatient treatment program, they have spent a significant period of time residing in a treatment facility and working on their recovery without any distractions. The transition out of a treatment program can be jarring. Instead of diving in head first and returning home, reintroducing temptations and triggers into one’s life immediately after treatment, another option is to move to a transitional sober living facility. Sober living facilities are excellent transitional residencies for individuals working towards reintegrating into society after rehab.

Benefits

There are many benefits to moving into a transitional sober living facility after completing an addiction treatment program. Below are a few clear benefits of choosing to move to a sober living residence:

Integration

Transitional sober living facilities allow an individual who is newly sober to begin to integrate back into society at their own pace.

Structure

Many sober living facilities have strict rules for clients. These help reinforce the structure practiced in the treatment program, as well as providing practice for honoring boundaries.

Accountability

The sober living facility is filled with other individuals who are in the same sober boat—you cannot live in a sober living home if you aren’t sober, so in order to keep the roof over your head, you must respect the rules (or you will be asked to leave).

Camaraderie

Everyone in a sober living residence has a common goal, which is to remain sober. This commonality can draw people together as there is an underlying connection with every client.

Control

You have the option to move out of the sober living facility whenever you feel ready. This means that in many cases, you can stay for as long or as little as you see fit.

Practice

Much of the structure that is set in place in sober living facilities is to provide an individual with the opportunity to practice leading a healthy, sober life (still somewhat inside of a sober bubble).

Every individual is different and each person’s experience with substance abuse, addiction and recovery will be unique.

The list of benefits may no necessarily resonate with each person going through recovery. Moving into a transitional sober living facility really depends on the individual’s needs at the time of the conclusion of their substance abuse and addiction treatment program.

Every person’s situation is different, but there are far fewer drawbacks to moving into a sober living facility than there are benefits. For individuals who have families, perhaps spending more time away from their partner’s and/ or children may weigh into the decision as to whether or not move to a sober living facility.

It is imperative to keep in mind that moving to a sober living facility is almost like an extension of one’s treatment program. Should a person not feel ready to return home due to possible triggers and temptations, moving to a sober living residence is an excellent alternative, as it will hopefully reduce the risk of relapse. Additionally, by living in a transitional sober residence, it allows an individual to continue to spend time prioritizing one’s recovery above all else, until it becomes second nature. This is the only way a person can sustain long term sobriety.
