Addiction, also known as substance use disorder (SUD), is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) as a chronic, relapsing brain disorder. It is characterized by compulsively engaging in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences. Research has indicated, that while addiction problems are slightly more prevalent in males, females are still affected, as their reported drug abuse rates are merely two percent lower than men. Further, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), “scientists who study substance use have discovered special issues related to hormones, menstrual cycle, fertility, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause that can impact women’s struggles with drug use.” Substance use disorder can be framed as a repeating cycle with different stages. These recurring stages are called a cycle because they generally progress in a repetitive pattern until some form of treatment takes place to intervene and alleviate the addiction. Supporting women in recovery is a meaningful way to make a significant difference in the lives of those working towards a healthy, substance-free future.
